Rewording tools: what they change and what they quietly break

Most rewording tools are a thesaurus with a text box. That is fine for a marketing email and actively dangerous on anything with numbers in it.

Rewording tools mostly do one thing: keep your sentence exactly as it is and replace individual words. It is cheap to build, it looks like it worked, and on technical writing it is the riskiest thing you can do to a draft.

What a substitution pass actually does

Give one of these "The results demonstrate a significant improvement across 42 samples" and you get back something like "The findings illustrate a considerable enhancement across over forty samples."

Read that again. Three things changed and only one of them was the wording.

"Significant" became "considerable". In a paper, significance is a statistical claim. Considerable is a vague impression. The sentence now asserts something different, and nothing warned you.

"42 samples" became "over forty samples". Your sample size is now wrong. It reads fine.

The sentence is the same length, same shape, same rhythm. Which is why the score barely moves.

Why the score barely moves

The signals detectors weigh most heavily are structural: how much sentence length varies, clause rhythm, punctuation density, function word rates. A thesaurus pass changes none of them. Your sentence is exactly as long as it was, with the same clause order and the same the, of and and holding it together.

Worse, substitution can push a score up. Thesaurus output reaches for the more formal option nearly every time, and formal uniform vocabulary sits closer to the generated end of the distribution, not further from it. It also breaks collocations: "conduct research" is idiomatic, "administer research" is not, and enough of those makes prose read as machine-processed rather than written.

What actually changes how text reads

Structural edits, not lexical ones:

  • merge two sentences, or split one
  • cut the connective at the start of a sentence
  • reduce stacked hedges to a single qualifier
  • vary how paragraphs open instead of opening each the same way
  • delete the closing paragraph that only restates

Those move sentence length variation, connective density and rhythm, which are the things being measured. They also make the writing better, which the synonym pass does not. See what makes text read as machine written and paragraph rewriting.

The test to run before trusting any rewording tool

Paste in a sentence with a number, a statistical term and a citation. Something like:

These results are consistent with earlier reports (Smith et al., 2020), showing a mean
increase of 12.5% (p < 0.001) across 42 samples.

Then check the output for all five things: the 12.5%, the p value, the 42, the citation, and whether "consistent with" still means what it meant. A tool that alters any of them will alter them in your paper too, and it will do it silently.

Ours treats every one of those as protected and refuses a rewrite that would change one, which is why it sometimes hands a paragraph back untouched. A paragraph that still reads slightly generated is a much smaller problem than a paragraph whose numbers no longer match the study.

Where rewording is genuinely fine

None of the above applies to text with no factual load. Marketing copy, a cover letter, a bio, a description. Nothing breaks if "significant" becomes "considerable" because nothing depended on the distinction.

The risk scales with how much of your meaning lives in specific values, which is why academic and technical writing is the worst possible place to run a general-purpose tool.
