How to avoid Turnitin AI detection

Turnitin reads the same properties every detector reads. The difference is that you never see its number, which makes checking beforehand the only move available.

Two facts shape everything about this. Turnitin runs automatically on submission, and the report goes to your institution rather than to you. So there is no feedback loop, and the only version of the check you control happens before you submit.

What Turnitin's indicator reads

It reads regularity: predictable word choice, and sentence lengths that stay close to each other.

Turnitin publishes how often that goes wrong on genuine human writing: 4%.

The properties that move a Turnitin score

Same four as everywhere else, because they are properties of the text rather than of the tool.

Sentence length variation. The strongest one. Human academic writing in our corpus has a within-document standard deviation of 8.7 words against 6.4 for generated text. Split a long sentence, merge two short ones.

Connective openings. "Moreover", "Furthermore", "Additionally" open 2.4% of human sentences and 5.8% of generated ones. Delete most of them.

Specific detail. Name the method, give the number. Generalising is the habit that reads as generated.

Paragraph shape. Break the topic-sentence-support-restatement template.

Two Turnitin-specific things worth knowing

Below 20% carries less weight. Turnitin states that documents scoring under 20% show a higher incidence of wrong flags, because a low percentage is built from a small flagged region.

Flagged regions run wider than their cause. Turnitin's own analysis found 54% of falsely flagged sentences sit directly beside a genuinely flagged one and 26% two sentences away. What raises a score without anybody intending it

Another editing pass. Smoothing removes variation. A fifth draft scores higher than a first.
