Can Google Docs detect AI?

Google Docs does not run a detector. What it does keep is version history, which is the most useful thing about it in this situation and works in your favour.

Google Docs is a word processor. It has no AI detection feature, it does not score your writing, and it does not report anything to anybody about how a document was produced.

Google Classroom is a delivery platform in the same position: it collects submissions and hands them to whatever a school has integrated. Detection comes from the integrated tool, not from Google. What Google Docs does have, and why it matters

Version history, kept automatically, showing the document growing over time.

This is the strongest record available to anybody in this situation, and it costs nothing because it is already happening. It shows a document being written across sessions rather than appearing whole, with timestamps.

Word does the same through OneDrive and SharePoint autosave.

What still gets scored downstream

Once the document is submitted, whatever your institution has integrated reads it, and that tool reads the finished words. It has no access to your version history and no way to know how the text arrived.

What it reads is regularity: predictable word choice, and sentence lengths that stay close to each other. Human academic writing in our corpus varies sentence length with a standard deviation of 8.7 words, generated text with 6.4.

One Google Docs habit that raises a score

Suggestion features and add-ons that rewrite or tighten your sentences smooth the prose, and smoothing removes the variation a classifier reads as human.
